THE POSTAL SERVICE IS PRINTING MARTÍN RAMÍREZ STAMPS

by Andrew Russeth

March 23, 2015 – This has to be the finest news I’ve heard in weeks: the United States Postal Service has announced that it is issuing five postage stamps with details of works by the great Martín Ramírez (1895–1963), the Mexican American artist whose irresistible drawings are filled with hypnotic patterns, grand architecture, chugging trains, goofy, smiling people, curious animals, and countless other bits of the natural world. The New York Times, which brought the story to our attention, notes that this is something of an unusual development since self-taught artists rarely find their work on postage stamps. Enough talking—click the image below to see the stamps in high resolution, in their full beauty, and visit the website of New York gallery Ricco/Maresca to take in more Ramírez works. Ricco/Maresca, which has an exhibition of the artist’s work up through May 2, is hosting a reception for the stamps on Thursday, March 26.
